Wakaranai Lodgewakaranai

Rooms

Seven rooms. Shared kitchen, baths, and living. The private rooms are for rest. The house does the rest.
A wood stove with fire burning at Wakaranai Lodge.

The rooms are not trying to be hotel rooms. They are places to sleep well, dry your layers, read for a while, and come back to the table when the house starts smelling like dinner.

Each room is part of the same old worker's dormitory, slowly becoming softer, warmer, and more alive. Bathrooms, kitchen, and living spaces are shared. That's how the lodge works.

Room types

Shared by everyone

The room is only part of the stay.

Living, dining, kitchen, gear room, and outside spaces are shared. Private rooms are for sleep and quiet. The rest of the place is where the day opens up.

What else you should know.

Food

We will have items available such as coffee and sourdough from Tomoe Coffee and Bakery near Rusutsu, organic jam from Berri Berry Café in Minamifurano, tea, and similar local goods.

Nearby: 一恵 (onigiri / to-go) about a 2‑minute walk; a small community store (typically Mon, Wed, Fri) with a drinks vending machine next door; 苫鵡 まんぷく a few minutes further; Wamp for farm-to-table burgers and more; Shinta izakaya about 1 km / 15 minutes on foot. Tomamu Resort restaurants are 4 km away. Opening hours shift with the season. Check Google Maps before you go.

Getting here

The Kami Tomamu bus stop is about 400 m from the lodge. Buses run a few times a day toward Tomamu Station (about 10 minutes; a stop near the resort) or Minamifurano (about 38 minutes). Times change with season and holidays. No car is doable; expect planning around the bus. A car is still the most flexible option. Parking at the lodge; roads are plowed well.

Skiing & outside

Tomamu Resort is 4 km away by bus or car (we don't have guest bikes). Plenty of parking at the resort, including for night skiing. A mellow ski-touring route to Karifuri-dake (狩振岳, 1323 m) starts from the lodge; a 5‑minute drive to the trailhead saves about 20 minutes of approach. Cross-country skiing around the area works well too. Guides can be arranged; Raven Outdoors covers backcountry skiing and fly fishing.

Summer brings fishing on local rivers, rafting with outfitters such as Little Tree, and the Ukai gondola. More on winter and summer.

House rhythm

Check-in after 15:00. Check-out by 10:00. No smoking indoors. No pets. Quiet after 22:00. Children are welcome. This is a shared house, so parents look after kids in common spaces and bathrooms. Ideal for remote work when you need it: fast internet, without turning the lodge into an office.
