adventures in obihiro

sorting old tiles in Obihiro

Today was a town day. It has been pretty slammer the last week or so, and we have been needing some more supplies so we could finish things up.

First really tho was an onsen. It has been much more convenient to do things like shaving at the onsen, and I was starting to get rather shaggy. We have a nice onsen in Obihiro, run by good people. Its perched up on the hill overlooking town, and its nice looking out. It was especially good when there was snow, and the way everything looked, but super nice in the spring as the trees start to come back to life.

The reason why we really came tho is to get more wood, so we can finish building out the sinks. All the wood we had previously purchased had been allocated to other projects in the meantime, so we needed to load up on 2x4s and some more plywood. Tomorrow we will try to build out the form for the sink, and see how that goes. I am pretty excited to get that in, and up to shape.

Next we went to visit my friend Shingo. He is an old plaster shop owner we met a few weeks ago, and he kinda adopted us a bit. He has been helping us find the supplies we are looking for, and surprisingly, in Japan, hydrated lime is pretty hard to find, and hydraulic lime is next to impossible. He was able to order in hydrated lime for us, and it arrived last week, so we went to pick that up today. We actually found a good lead on hydraulic lime, but it seems the next shipment, which comes in from Spain, isn't due till June, so we might be out of luck putting the finishing touches on the tadelakt until June.

Shingo also has a whole old building, that is full of left over tiles, from projects where the builders didn't use all their tiles. The house is just kind of rotting away, and is just stacked with stacks on stacks. He just let us pick through, and grab what we wanted.

We have rough plans in place to come down and eat dinner with him and his wife, sometime late april, and that should be a fun time for sure. It is nice to have those little connections, in random places. Thats the joy of taking on fun and interesting projects, much like building out our van in Italy, it leads you to funny places, and meeting funny people, that you wouldn't usually meet as a foreigner in a foreign place. He was incredibly surprised when I walked into his little shop the first time, using translate to try to explain what I was looking for, and he was shocked when Denise walked in after I hadn't come out after about ten minutes.

Funny how life works ehh.

We got the goods though, and tomorrow should be a goood day.

Have a great day n wakaranai.
